Embodied Spirituality:
An Integral-Participatory Approach
Jorge N. Ferrer, PhD
A consensus is growing among transpersonal thinkers and spiritual leaders about the importance of cultivating a fully embodied spirituality that honors the voice and wisdom of the body, instincts, heart, mind, and consciousness. Embodied spiritual practice seeks to foster the creative participation of these human attributes in the unfolding of our spiritual lives. This workshop introduces an integral-participatory approach to embodied spirituality, which involves mindful physical contact between practitioners allowing access to the creative power of these human dimensions. After a brief introduction, the workshop will guide you in the practice of interactive embodied meditation, as well as include periods for artwork and sharing among participants. Individuals from all spiritual orientations can creatively incorporate the practical tools presented in this workshop to strengthen spiritual vitality and community, as well as to rescue human dimensions that may have been historically overlooked in traditional religious practice. Join us in this experiential exploration of contemporary embodied spirituality!
Jorge N. Ferrer, Ph.D., is core faculty in the Department of East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), San Francisco, where he teaches courses on transpersonal psychology, comparative mysticism, embodied spiritual inquiry, and spiritual dimensions of sexuality and relationships. He is the award-winning author of Revisioning Transpersonal Theory: A Participatory Vision of Human Spirituality (SUNY Press, 2002), Participation and Spirit: Transpersonal Essays in Psychology, Education, and Religion (SUNY Press, forthcoming), and co-editor of The Participatory Turn: Spirituality, Mysticism, Religious Studies (SUNY Press, 2008). A leading scholar on Transformative Practices and Integral Epistemology at the Esalen Center for Theory and Research, California, in 2009 he became an advisor to the organization Religions for Peace at the United Nations on a research project aimed at solving global interreligious conflict. He was born in Barcelona, Spain.
